As a woman, you are responsible for your vaginal health. The vagina is a sensitive environment that may be thrown off balance by any of a number of things. Here are three common vaginal infections women should know about:

Viral vaginitis. Vaginitis refers to irritation and swelling in the vagina, which is often caused by infection. Viral vaginitis is caused by viral infection – herpes simplex virus and human papillomavirus (HPV), for example. Viruses that cause vaginitis are relatively common, and they are most often spread by way of sexual contact. Therefore, when you get treatment for viral vaginitis, it is important that your partner gets treated at the same time. Symptoms of viral vaginitis vary, depending on the specific virus you are infected with, and they may include discharge, foul odor, itching, burning, swelling, redness, and/or vaginal warts. There are two different HPV vaccines that have proven to also be effective against genital warts. Ask your doctor about these vaccines as part of your gynecological care.

Chlamydia. Caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis, this is the most common sexually transmitted disease in America. Symptoms include excessive discharge, pain while urinating, pus in the urine, irregular bleeding (often following intercourse), abdominal or pelvic pain, and inflammation/redness of the labia and urethra. It is not uncommon for women who have Chlamydia to not experience symptoms at all, which means that unfortunately, Chlamydia often goes untreated until it has caused more serious problems like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Antibiotics are used to treat Chlamydia.

Trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis, often simply called “trick,” is a sexually transmitted disease that is cause by a single-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginis. Symptoms vary from case to case, but may include any combination of the following: a greenish and frothy discharge, a musty smell, vaginal itching and irritation, painful intercourse, burning during urination, and abdominal discomfort. Like other vaginal infections, it is not unusual for women who have trichomoniasis to experience no symptoms. Treatment generally involves antibiotics.

As you can see, vaginal infections are caused by a number of different culprits, and are often spread by way of sexual contact. Therefore, it is important that you get regular gynecological examinations in order to stay on top of your vaginal health and catch infections before they cause more serious problems. It is also important that your sexual partner(s) get treatment at the same time, so you do not pass the infection back and forth. If you think you are at risk for any of the above infections, book an appointment with your gynecologist today.

Botox and Dysport are both cosmetic surgery solutions that have been derived from the same toxin and serve essentially the same purpose: paralyzing the muscles in the area in order to eliminate the wrinkles and lines generate by motion (facials expressions like frowning, laughing or smiling for instance). At the same time, both products have received the FDA seal of approval, even though Botox has been available on the US market much longer compared to Dysport. However, it is necessary to point out that even though Dysport manufacturers have received the US green light more recently, it has been frequently used in Europe and Canada. By the end of this article, you will find out how Botox and Dysport score in terms of speed, duration, safety and costs.

Time Taken For First Visible Results

In regards to the timeframe between the injection and the first visible results, Dysport has proven slightly superior to Botox (at least for 30 percent of the people in this study). This means that while individuals who utilized Botox injections had to wait for 2-3 days before the effects of the substance became prominent, it is entirely possible that the initial results of Dysport become visible on the very first day. On the other hand, keep in mind that this only refers to the initial results and not the full effect of the injection, which on average is similar for both of them.

Duration of Effect

As far as the duration of the effect is concerned, several clinical trials have shown that Botox is just slightly better than Dysport. However, other studies revealed the opposite results and consensus among cosmetic surgeon boards is yet to be reached. The most probable reason for the diverse testing results resides in the lack of normalization for the quantity of substance injected among the subjects of the studies. In other words, there is a direct correlation between the quantity of substance utilized and the length of the period when the results are visible.

Quantity Required

It is also necessary to point out that the quantity of Dysport necessary to obtain the same results as Botox is 2.5 times larger. This means that 1 unit of Botox converts into approximately 2.5 units from the Dysport solution. Now, the larger quantity of Dysport (and its consistence) means that it has the potential of spreading easier within the area, but that has positive and negative consequences. To put it simply, it makes Dysport more effective for eliminating the wrinkles in larger zones (such as the forehead) but less convenient for localized usage (eyebrows or eyes).

Let’s Talk Money

From the financial point of view, one unit of Dysport is cheaper than one unit of Botox by approximately 5 to 10 percent. However, don’t forget about the conversion rates discussed previously. Depending on the type of procedure, you may be able to utilize less Dysport and therefore it could constitute the more profitable alternative. In order to learn which product would prove more proficient in treating your particular type of wrinkles, it is advisable to schedule a consultation with your cosmetic surgeon and assess the state of your epidermis, facial structure, potential side effects and so on.

Avoid Stress – Avoid Aging

Stress…The word itself makes one feel stressed. Some words have powerful connotations. By simply reading them you tend to start believing in their power. Imagine, if the word disturbs you so much and is capable of affecting your mind even momentarily, what happens when you are actually stressed?

How Stress Affects Us

Stress wrecks havoc not only on your mental well being but shows up on your physique. It is a major cause that contributes to the aging process among humans. A research conducted on the effects of stress on telomere – the protective layer on the DNA that protects it from damage – indicated that a stressed person’s telomeres start getting damaged or frayed more than a person who is not under any kind of stress. This generally happens after a person starts aging biologically. The research was conducted on mothers who had to take care of loved ones that were ill, chronically. The research also noted an interesting point; mothers with positive attitudes had normal telomeres than those who let the stress get them.

This indicates that stress not only affects the mental state of a person but it permeates to the cellular level causing it damage and subsequent premature aging.

On another level, the neuroendocrine system (nervous + endocrine system) works in tandem to maintain various functions in the body. It also protects human body from internal as well as external threats by performing functions as accelerated heart beats, increase in blood flow, and release of stress hormones such as cortisol to deal with an actual or perceive threat. When the body is exposed to too many stressors, the system cannot cope and a person is said to be stressed chronically.

This contributes to long term damaging effects on the brain (Alzheimer’s), arteries (thickening of arteries), heart (cardiovascular diseases) apart from the mental disorders in mild or severe forms (depression). Thus a person might end up aging prematurely due to elevated stress levels.

How To Avoid Stress

One can safely say that there are as many stress coping methods as there are stressed individuals. The coping mechanism differs in each and every individual. There are no quick fixes and formulas when you are dealing with stress as causes may differ. Albeit, we can provide a general guideline which would help all the people coping one way or the other with stressors at varying degrees:

  • Identify The Stressors – Identify the root cause of stress. This will help you avoid them in a proactive and positive manner.
  • Eat Nutritious Food – At the root of many physical and mental ailments is nutritive deficiency. By eating food that comprises of organic vegetables, fruits, cereals, pulses and whole grains you will do your body and mind a great favour. Do not skimp on breakfast; skimp on sugar and calorie loaded junk food.
  • Sufficient Snooze Time – Clock in sufficient sleep to keep your brain and body from being over worked. Sleep induces the ‘happiness’ hormone – serotonin, apart from the growth hormone – HGH which is responsible for the wear and tear of tissues in the human body. A good night’s sleep ensures that a person is well rested and ready to tackle the day to day activities in a proactive manner. Sleep is also said to fight wrinkles in popular folklore. So if you want to keep the signs of aging at bay, sleep for 6 – 8 hours per day.
  • Be Active – If you do not have the time to exercise, ensure that you at least take a brisk walk round the block – be it to your work place, around the park, or back home. You can even use a bicycle to move around which will increase your metabolism and exercise your muscles apart from making you feel good (you see you will be doing your bit for the environment!). Research indicates that even moderate levels of exercise helps people stay and look young.
  • Be Positive – A positive attitude towards life’s little and big problems helps you cope with stress better. Do away with the negative self talk, stay away from pessimism in any form and believe in your ability to deal with all kinds of stressors.

Aging is also a state of mind and so are stressors. If you take care of the latter, the former is bound to improve. Keep stress to minimal if you cannot avoid it and stay fit and enhance your lifespan a bit more.

Understanding Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are chemicals produced naturally in the adrenal cortex of vertebrates. These are hormones, as well as steroids – meaning that they have a particular chemical structure. While we produce corticosteroids naturally, they are perhaps better known for their medical use, whereby analogues of the substances are created (or more technically ‘synthesized’) in laboratory settings. Corticosteroids are used in a vast range of physiological processes, and by creating these synthetic analogues it is possible for doctors to trigger a range of desirable changes in the body as a result.

Among the roles of corticosteroids are moderating the stress response and the immune response. Produced in the adrenal glands then, these are substances that are created under stress, and they trigger a range of changes in the body such as carbohydrate metabolism, protein catabolism, inflammation, blood electrolyte levels and more.

There are of course various types of corticosteroids that control specific areas of these functions. For instance glucocorticoids include cortisol and these control carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism (meaning that the body is more likely to burn these for fat). These are anti inflammatory and prevent the release of phospholipid, and reducing the action of esoniphil. This then gives them many uses in treating immune reactions in a medical setting.

Mineralocorticoids include aldosterone and are tasked with controlling electrolyte and water levels by causing the kidneys to retain more water.

There are a vast range of different medical uses for steroids, but most people will associate these with their anti-inflammatory action. Topical steroids for instance are used in order to treat swelling on the skin, the eyes and in the mucous membranes and these can be used to treat rashes and allergic reactions among other things.

Another way to treat the mucous membranes meanwhile is with inhaled steroids. These help to prevent swelling in the throat and in the neck and this is highly useful in cases where you might be unable to breath. For instance asthma is often caused by sensitivity in the oesophagus and this causes the throat to swell and prevents patients from being able to breath. A way to manage this is with asthma inhalers which in fact are just inhaled steroids used to prevent swelling. Likewise though inhaled steroids can be used to treat an actual attack, and also to treat those having some kind of allergic reaction.

Corticosteroids also come in oral and systemic forms meaning they can be swallowed, injected or administered intravenously. In many cases injected corticosteroids can be used to treat back pain. This can be helpful when a damaged bone or muscle in the spine is swelling and thus placing pressure on the nerves. By injecting the area with corticosteroids it is possible to prevent the swelling and to provide long term relief.

A range of other corticosteroids are used in many other areas to treat a range of problems. Or instance they can be used in order to treat skin diseases and brain tumors. However in large quantities there can also be undesirable side effects of corticosteroids such as Cushing’s syndrome.

Have you ever known anyone who had ringworm? You might even have had it yourself. It’s a common skin condition that can affect anyone of any age, though children get it most often. Animals also sometimes develop ringworm. Considering how many people get it, it’s surprising that most people don’t really know much about ringworm.

What is Ringworm?

Ringworm is a misnomer. Even though worm is in the name, no worms are involved in ringworm at all. This skin condition is named that because of the way it looks. In fact, ringworm is actually a skin fungus. The condition is contagious and can be spread from person to person or from animals to people.

The medical name for ringworm is tinea (which means “growing worm” in Latin) plus the name of the body part it affects. For instance, if you have ringworm on your body, it is technically called tinea corporis. If it is on your feet, it’s tinea pedis, or as it is more commonly known, athlete’s foot. If you get it in the groin area, it’s tinea cruris, or jock itch.

Many years ago, it was believed this condition was caused by a worm or parasite. We know now that ringworm is caused by a fungus, but the ringworm label stuck.

How Do You Get Ringworm?

There are a number of ways you can get ringworm. It’s highly contagious so it’s easy to contract from another person who has the condition. It can be from direct skin-to-skin contact or you can simply touch some of their belongings like a comb, clothing, or bed sheets.

Animals like cats and dogs or livestock like cows or hogs can carry the fungus and you can become infected from touching them. Fungi also live in the dirt so it is not unusual to contract the condition while digging in the garden or doing construction work.

Damp, moist conditions also encourage fungi to multiply rapidly. Sweating profusely, wearing damp bathing suits or tight, restrictive clothing and living in areas with hot, humid weather make people more vulnerable to fungal skin conditions.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Ringworm

Many times ringworm doesn’t require an official diagnosis because it is easy to recognize from its appearance. Other times it’s necessary to take skin scrapings and study them under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.

Ringworm is usually treated topically with antifungal creams, though particularly stubborn cases may require oral treatments. There are also some effective home remedies that will resolve the problem.

Ringworm is just one of the common ailments caused by fungi. You may suffer from a yeast infection, nail fungus, candida, or other problems caused by fungi. It is nothing to be ashamed of and you should not let embarrassment keep you from seeking treatment.
